The Life and Work of Luis Barragan
1 of 2
Luis Barragan is an icon of contemporary architecture-a genius of color, light, walls, the garden, the tower, the rooftop, he has influenced an entire generation of current architects, not least of them his one-time collaborator Ricardo Legorreta. Admirers of his work note its serenity, its harmony. In 1979, when Barragan was presented the Pritzker Prize, his work was referred to as "a sublime act of the poetic imagination." It is this aspect of Barragan's work that is presented in The Life and Work of Luis Barragan, a biographical portrait that reveals Barragan as a master of what he himself called "emotional architecture." Text and photographs combine in The Life and Work of Luis Barragan for a personal and evocative portrayal of the Mexican master that will fascinate everyone familiar with his legacy, and intrigue those who are only just discovering the power and influence of his work.

Le Corbusier: Polychromie Architecturale - Color Keyboards from 1931-1959, Second Revised Edition.
1 of 2
This highly complex and exact reproduction printed in pigments of Le Corbusier's renowned Salubra Colours in 13 sample cards, 4 slides and 63 color sample sheets provides an indispensable basis and invaluable tool for architects, interior and graphic designers. Corbusier designed two color collections for the Salubra wallpaper company: the Clavier de couleurs of 1931, with 43 colors, and the 1959 collection, with 20. Not content with the mere color selection, drawn from his experience as an architect and painter, he also organized the tones on 12 sample cards in such a manner that, by using a slider, three or five colors could be varyingly isolated or combined. Each card contained a different color scheme meant, when applied, to create a particular spatial effect. This would become not only a useful tool but also a kind of testament of the purist color theory, an essential groundwork and a valuable instrument for all those who deal with color in theory or practice. Vol.1: 96 pp. 150 sketches and illus.; Vol.2: 13 sample cards w. 63 color shades and 4 slides; Vol.3: 63 Color plates. 250 pp., 209 color, 20 B&W illus., 3 vols/slipcase.

Paul Klee: Pedagogical Sketchbook
1 of 2
In his legendary Pedagogical Sketchbook, Paul Klee takes a theoretical approach to drawing using geometric shapes and lines. Evincing a desire to reunite artistic design and craft, and written in a tone that oscillates between the seeming objectivity of the diagram, the rhetoric of science and mathematics, and an abstract, quasi-mystical intuition, Klee’s text expresses key aspects of the Bauhaus’ pedagogy and guiding philosophies. In this book, he presents his own theory about the relationships between line, shape, surface, and color in the visual space.

a+u 04:23 Alvar Aalto Library Landscapes
1 of 2
ten public libraries designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto between the 1920s and 1970s. It was after the completion of the Vyborg Library, a project which began in 1927 and took seven years to complete, that the architect started to gain international recognition. While designing Vyborg Library, Aalto discovered “fantastic mountain landscapes”, leading him to create valley-like depressions as spaces for people to gather and read, surrounded by stepped terraces of bookshelves and natural light. Among the libraries presented here are Rovaniemi City Library, Woodberry Poetry Room at Harvard University, Wolfsburg Cultural Center, and Mount Angel Abbey. 176 p, ills colour & bw, 22 x 29 cm, pb, Japanese/English
