In the sense of Sri Lankan design, there is the towering Geoffrey Bawa, who, in the face of 200 years of British colonialism, rose to the finest heights. When you visit Colombo, you seek Bawa. But now, there is Beyond Bawa, new designers who have gone on and pushed further into the soul of this spectacularly beautiful country. Palinda Kannagara is one of the great stars of the new designers, and his projects - houses, schools, studios, retreats, wellness centers - are each an obvious breath of brilliance and care. It is as if that is what the land produces, such affection, such air, such detailing.
There are only twelve projects studied, but each is a composition you take. Not unlike seeing, for the first time, a Barragan. |
